Free Cruise to the Bahamas (Scam call) reported by

Got a call from this Seattle number that looked very similar to a friend's "CONGRATULATIONS YOU HAVE WON A FREE TRIP TO THE BAHAMAS " nonsense. Makes me paranoid that these w*rs have access to personal numbers and use Caller ID that look close to the numbers you know.

Silent call reported by

Received a call from 2067771212, which rang three times but then hung up just as it was forwarded to voice mail (which likely means they would have hung up had we answered). The number that is supposedly calling is fake; the scammers are hiding their real number and likely are not even in Seattle. Our area code has been receiving A LOT of these same types of calls since August 2014, with the number changing each week. Most likely the scammers pick an area code and exchange and call the numbers by order (212-555-0000, 212-555-0001, etc). I say this because my number usually gets the call first, then later my husband whose number is over 1000 numbers behind mine will get a call; if they were calling from a list of cell phone owners they would call us back to back. Calling in numerical order is par for the course when ignoring the Do Not Call list as well.

annoyance (Nuisance call) reported by

called me several times, early in the morning. cannot call back due to, "the number you have reached has been..." message. I hate these kind of people that make stupid robots auto dial. They have called me twice, perhaps now they will give up now...hopefully.

I've read you should not call back. The number can be an international pay-per-call service that will charge you through your service provider: From FCC: 'One Ring' Wireless Phone Scam The FCC has recently learned of a new phone scam targeting wireless consumers. Some wireless consumers are receiving calls from phone numbers with three-digit area codes that appear to be domestic, but are actually associated with international pay-per-call phone numbers. These calls often disconnect after one ring, not giving the consumer time to answer the call and tempting them to return the call. If you receive a call like this and do not recognize the number of the incoming call, do not return the call. If you return the phone call, you may be connected to an international hotline than can charge a fee just for connecting, along with significant per-minute fees if they can keep you on the phone. These charges may show up on your bill as premium services. This scam appears to be a variation of an old long distance phone scam that tricks consumers into receiving high charges on their phone bills. In the past, telephone consumers have been fooled into making expensive international calls by scam artists who leave messages on consumers' answering machines or their email accounts. The messages urge consumers to call a number with an "809," "284," "876" or some other area code to collect a prize, find out about a sick relative, or engage in sex talk. How the Scam Works Your wireless phone rings once or twice and then disconnects the call. When the number appears in your wireless phone log as a missed call, it appears to be a typical domestic telephone number; or you get an email or voicemail telling you to call a phone number with an "809", "284", "876" or some other three-digit international area code. When you return the call, you assume you are making a domestic long distance call – as "649," "809," "284," "876" and other area codes involved in this scam, appear to be t
