Beware of scammers. They are extremely deceptive. I get solicitation phone calls all the time and normally I don't even pick up, but for whatever reason I did today. The woman on the other end of the line gave me a one sentence pitch for donating to some generically named breast cancer research fund, closing with the words "can the ladies at the cancer center count on you?" My first response to her was "how do I know this is not a scam?" The phone went silent for a moment, and she said "Excuse me?" I repeated calmly and clearly, "how do I know this is legit?" The phone muted for a few more moments, and she came back on and said, "well thank you very much and have a nice day." I tried to keep her on the line. I said "no, no, no, hang on a minute..." She just responded as though she was having a completely different conversation: "okay, thanks, bye bye." The folks are professional scammers. Or they ignorantly work for professional scammers, and are probably instructed not to engage with people who ask whether it's a scam. If this call was legit she would have had no problem answering a simple question about the validity of the unsolicited inquiry. The fact that she hurried me off the phone as soon as it was clear I was skeptical is evidence that the name of her game is a classic scammers conversion game: dial as many people as you possibly can as fast as you can, and convert the unsuspecting as quickly as possible.

Woman asked for a William, and I told her she had the wrong number. "Well, maybe you can help me," was the response. She claimed to be collecting for cancer support donations. She wanted me to pay a small donation fee of $15 over the phone.I told her I do not pledge over the phone and she told me to have a good day and hung up.

Woman called and claimed to be collecting for cancer support donations. She wanted me to pay a small donation fee of $15 over the phone. When I asked her to mail me information so I could consider it she told me that she would not mail anything and that she was only collecting over the phone. When I said it didn't sound legit she told me to have a good day and hung up.

Breast Cancer "charity" (Unsolicited call) reported by


Not completely certain it was a true human on the line, but maybe a human assisted computer. Claimed to be some kind of breast cancer charity that sends medication to patients. I wasn't familiar with the name of the charity. As usual, they asked if they could count on a donation if they sent a packet. I always tell these solicitors that I never pledge money over the phone and if they want to send me a packet without a promised donation, they were welcome to. They never do.
