Scam call reported by charise
Ok so today I first received a call from 209-753-4937. Man had a heavy Indian accent. He told me that I was randomly selected from the population census (weird) to receive a $9,000 government grant. He gave me my approval code of AB143, verified my name, address, and email......he already had all this info. He said I needed to call 646-583-2392 and give them my approval code. I was curious so I did. When I called, they answered "federal grants", I explained what the call was for and was transferred to the "manager" Cindy Tyler who also had an Indian accent. She stated that I was to be awarded $9,000 once a year for 3 years and that I could choose to receive my money by direct deposit, moneygram, or by certified check. I played along to see. She re verified my info, asked if I have ever received a grant before and said she'd need to run it through her system for further verification and would be calling me back on an hour. 3 hours later, I called back. No answer, no voice-mail for 3 tries. On the 4th try, "Cindy" answered and said she was just getting ready to call me back. She ran my info through the system and saw that I wasn't registered for the grant system and would need to pay a one time fee of $230 for the registration. Before I called back, I had done some research on this number which showed Broadwing communications llc in new York and also had many allegations of fraud in the past, BBB rating of F and not accredited. I asked "Cindy" what company this is and she continued that she was with the grants department of the government. How do I know your legit? She directed me to a website www.governmentgrant.us which I visited and is clearly NOT part of the government. Can I register on your site and pay there? No, it's not secure, just review the website and call me back for the fee. What is the name of the exact grant I'm supposed to be getting? Her answer? Federal government grant. I mean really??
