GIC renewal - Scotiabank (Financial services) reported by

They called to tell me that my GIC is maturing soon, and to see if I want to renew it. They started asking personal info, like postal code, place of employment ... Didn't want to answer. Called Scotiabank to ask them about this number and they say that the number is legitimate !? and what they asked sounds right. It seems that Scotiabank hired some third party to call you just before your GIS is ready for renewal. I asked to be taken of that list, but they said they can not do it.

GIC renewal (Financial services) reported by

After a series of calls over a period of months, we finally spoke with the person calling. He purported to be from Scotiabank and was calling about a GIC certificate coming up for renewal. He asked repeatedly if anyone had called us from the branch regarding the renewal of the certificate. Each time my husband asked him for information, (i.e. his name, his phone number, what certificate, how much was it worth, what are the new rates, etc.?) he would deflect by asking if anyone had yet called from the branch. When we confronted him that it was a scam call, he maintained a very professional demeanor, insisting that he was from Scotiabank and we could call our branch if we weren't comfortable dealing with him. In the midst of the back-and-forth, he asked for our postal code, then asked for my husband's birthdate, and when hubby refused to give him that info, he proceeded on to another question. I cut him off at that point and accused him of fraud. He continued to insist he was legitimate even as we both hung up the phone. We have spoken to our bank several times on this issue as this scammer has more information than a normal phisher would have and we are concerned with bank security.

I received a message Sept 20/17 saying " this is Scotiiabank (Financial services) reported by

"this isScotiabank calling. We have an important message for and they said my full name...This is not a sales call. Please call us at 1-800-515-3320. I first called Scotia bank, there was no message in their system. They denied knowing the number. I then called the number, it started with a Scotiabank automated message that sounds ligit. Then a male answered, before I got a chance to say anything he asked me to give my acct number for verification. First I said I needed to know wherewas calling from. He said Toronto, but got confused when I asked where, just said east side. I told him what he was doing was fraud, and I would deal only in person with the bank, he hung up. This sounds very real! Do not give them any personal info. Call your branch directly!

I received two messages dated July 20 and 25, 2017 stating "This is Scotia Bank calling. This is not a sales call. We have important information for you. Please call us at 800-515-3320". Scotia Bank denies it is their number and says it is a scammer and not to give out personal information.

It's not legitimate! It's a scam call!

How do you know it is legitimate? I called and it sounded quite real too but I didn't share any personal information. Even though the person's English was good, I pushed them to find the number on the scotiabank.com website and they couldn't. Any phone number that asks for bank account information or private data should be listed on an official website for the organization they represent. 1-800-515-3320 is not listed on https://www.scotiabank.com/ so it could be anyone registering the 1 800 number and imitating the bank. It is very important to stop trusting callers to the point of sharing information that can be used for fraud or identity theft. You don't want to lose most of your savings and your identity. It isn't just a matter of money. It can be as bad as losing your ability to legally work or own property. Many scammers are trying to get this information from you and it is easier for them than ever.
