Fake Utility/Power Company Scam (Scam call) reported by


They called around noon, and I answered because I thought it was a number I recognized. I immediately heard what I thought was a television in the background, and the woman speaking had a gruff, phlegmy, just-hit-the-meth-pipe, voice, and almost seems surprised that I answered. It seemed like she said something muffled and the TV noise got quieter. She then spieled a line about Duke Energy and a solar power initiative, and then asked "Is your power bill a hundred?" SOMEBODY was working from memory and not reading her script. I replied with something like it varies, as I was trying to decide if I had time to play along and waste her time. I decided to pretend to give the phone to "my roommate," so I could use a different voice, and started to say "My roommate usually handles the bills, so I don't really keep track of the power use," but only got the first half of the sentence out before she unceremoniously ended the call. Found other reports about this number online, running different scams, so I decided to share my run in here. Even among scammers and thieves, apparently there are people too lazy to take their occupation seriously.
