I'd be extremely suspicious that someone else has obtained your son's personal information and is using it fraudulently. Were you able to obtain any information as to what the charges were related to and who the billing entities were? We faced something similar years ago. A physicians office that we used was billing our insurance company for someone else's child. This happened 3 times. I called the first time and thought that the problem was totally cleared. I did notify the insurance company just in case. The second time it happened, I called the doctor's office and the woman thought that it was hysterically funny. I, on the other hand, did not. When I finished with her, neither did she. The insurance company was already withholding this payment of $6K plus in hospital charges over several days/visits. The third time, I finally spoke with someone in the doctor's office who actually cared. She was thoroughly aggravated. She found out that no one was bothering to even check out the Social Security numbers of the adults involved, just billing us for another family's child, committing basically insurance fraud. It finally stopped after I spoke with this very helpful person. Fraud today is much more rampant, especially from overseas countries.
