obviously criminal call with extortive intent! why don't authorities persecute these crooks? because they're overseas? This is a lame excuse because police could start by going after the owners of these 800 lines and/or VOIP providers who allow foreign criminals to use U.S. communications infrastructure!!! Out of curiosity I called the number specified in the recording (1-866-978-0860) just to toy with these people. Call was answered by someone with an Indian or Pakistani accent claiming to be an authorized Microsoft representative, just like your run-of-the-mill call center, right? He insisted that I needed to be in front of my computer and follow instructions, and I insisted that he reveal the procedure beforehand, to which he refused until he hung up on me. You'd have to be pretty gullible to fall into this trap, but clearly there are some unwary people out there who do, otherwise this scam wouldn't exist, so they need to be very careful. I know that this must have been reported ad nauseam, but it isn't any less disheartening and outrageous, especially when you've seen the horrible scare some elderly people have gotten from this.
