Scam Put ransomware on computer (Scam call) reported by LLIhotz
Caller ID read legitimate Xfinity/Comcast Customer Service number 800 934 6489, but it was scammers on the phone with an Indian accent. They said they were getting error signals from my computer and that it had been hacked. They wanted on to fix the problem. Because I recognized the number, I foolishly let them on. They showed me some pages that would suggest that there was a problem but said they wanted to charge $299 to fix it. I was then alerted and shut off the communication to the computer, but not before he threatened $500 to get it fixed and he had already added the malware onto the computer that stopped it from booting Windows, requiring a "start-up" or BIOS password. They had the gall to call me again, and I told them I had to leave, could I call them back, and they gave me the following number: 888-213-6046. I called the number back later and verified that the same man answered the phone who gave me that phone number. Meanwhile, I had to take my computer to be repaired and it will cost a minimum of $211.
