This number is total BS. They have some of your persona information so they try and lure you into paying for a debt you may have never owed. For example, I signed up for a pay day loan but never got one. They're stating to me that I owed on a payday loan that I started to pay on but never paid in full...NAH...(always check your credit report for fraud) this debt was stating to be over 5 years old.

This is a bush beater for a debt collections company that specializes in buying expired or high risk debts (the kind that doesn't really have enough information to prove the debt). They call up, sound big and official, and try to scare and harass people into panicing and either admitting to the debt on record or paying them because they think they are going to get in trouble. They may claim to be from a legal service and tell you you need to call the 'attorney's office', which is another person sitting 5 feet away with a phone. If you owe a legit debt, either contact the original creditor and try to work something out, or keep on these guys to settle it for less. They paid 5-10 cents on the dollar amount owed, so they can accept anything over that and make a profit. Demand a validation of the debt by mail. Get their address and send them a certified letter contesting the debt; if they don't respond in 30 days, they lose their rights to collect. And if the debt is past the statute of limitations in your state, just tell them to sue you. If they do, and it's truly past the statute, file a countersuit for violation of your FDCPA rights, and push for the maximum penalty, which is a quick $1,000 in your pocket. And if they do actually sue you, show up in court. If both of you don't show up, they still win by default. But if they don't show up and you do, you can have the case dismissed with prejudice, meaning they can never sue you again...and you win your countersuit by default. Don't speak to these folks unless you have to, don't give them any information at all, and don't be intimidated by them. It's someone sitting in a call center, trying to scare money out of people. Make them work for it.
