Statistics Canada called and asked me when I will complete the "Monthly Retail Trade Survey" for my employer. They would send a link for the survey to my work email. Every month, when I complete the survey, I gave Statistics Canada my cell phone number in case if they have any questions about my responses.

Ask to speak with an adult, probably because I don't sound like one. The guy said he is from Statistics Canada, asking about Census, asked about a specific address which was my previous address. Told him that I no longer live there, and he removed my number from their file and no more questions.

Legit call from Stats Canada (Service) reported by


Had a call from number above, left a voicemail. They stated their name and provided a reference number. Stated another agent would call back if I don't call them. It was at 12:30pm on a Sunday, and the number they told me to call back on, was different than on their website. Was told to call 1-833-720-2021. I called the number online (1-833-340-2021) and spoke to an agent. The call was legit, and they needed information on a specific address (where I no longer reside), so they took my number off the file for that address.

Call identified as number only. Person asking for information in relation to the Census I completed. She could not give me my name or any information but was asking for me to give information to her. She was very persistent even after I googled the phone number while speaking with her and told her that this was not a legitimate phone number. I refused and hung up.

First time they called it was from a private number. They called immediately again from 1-833-977-8287 number -- but it looked like a robophone. I answered and a very nice-sounding woman said her name and announced she was from Stats Canada. I already did my survey online and I was suspicious, so I hung up and put the number on the block.

Called and left on hold for a while. Good old Hold. Thanks Stats Can for wasting my time twice! 10/10 would waste time again!

CONFIRMED LEGIT: I received a message with Reference and Case ID numbers and this number to call back. I first called the main Statistics Canada number as shown on their official website (Toll-free: 1-800-263-1136) and asked them to verify the phone and reference numbers from the message. It was confirmed as a legitimate call by Stats Can themselves.

Survey tied to a specific address. Since the address they gave me didn't match my address, they apologized and said I couldn't take the survey. Everything was legit, they didn't ask for anything.

Same here. Survey linked to a specific address which was not mine, so they had no further questions. Called statistics Canada (phone number on their website) and they confirmed this phone number was one of theirs.

Also had this happen! They stated an address, I told them it was wrong and they said the call was over. If it was really Statistics Canada, they would have the correct information or ask where you currently live.

Called said it was stats Canada, had incorrect address, said the survey was address specific, ironically the address they gave is owned and only low income. I agree with other commenter Stats Canada should know your address. Isn't is biased to only do low income housing for Canadian Health Survey?

I received a phone message as I missed the call. It claimed to be from Statistics Canada, gave a reference number and the phone number to call back stating that I could call evenings and weekends. I tried calling the number that evening only about 10 minutes after receiving the call but got the Stats Can message about their business hours Monday to Friday. I know the number is legitimate from the Stats Can website, but the number still could have been spoofed during the call, leaving a legit sounding message so to try spoofing me again later. So still unsure about phone call, but waiting to contact Stats Can Monday by other means to verify reference number and get advise.

I think when they call you they may spoofed their number, but when you call them back, the number you dialed can not be spoofed by you or your phone right? As long as that number shows on the goverment website, so I think it should be ok.

Go to the statecan government webpage link is below ???? https://www.statcan.gc.ca/eng/survey/faq#a4 Click on that link or copy and past into your browser and then scroll down that page approx half way. There are several numbers listed and one says "Survey participation inquiries 1-833-977-8287 National TTY line: 1-866-753-7083" This proves that this number in fact Statistics Canada calling about a survey they want you to participate in.

Yes, legit. I've confirmed this is legitimate through the main StatsCan number. There is a good explanation in another comment below (also posted on their official website) as to why they may be trunked calls. And as for using the NATO phonetic alphabet, this is an internationally-known system which many (if not all) government departments use. Yes... really!!!

This is a legit number. You can find it on the Statistics Canada (gc.ca) website. What more authentic thing would you require to verify it's aunthenticity? Trust, or no trust is upto you. But when there are sources proving it's legitimacy, why are you confusing other people with your lack of knowledge? Don't trust? Call the police. Let them verify you their organization's authenticity. But do not confuse us general people. Phone scam is not funny. Do not mislead people.

I checked Statistics Canada's website before returning the call. The number shows up on the FAQ page. (Contact us - Survey FAQ - Frequently asked questions - Is this a legitimate Survey- look near the bottom )For me, the call was related to the Labour Force Survey I am participating in.

A Male human voice called saying he's from statistic Canada (Survey) reported by


I was told over the phone saying the survey is Mandatory. And started asking some questions. He started off asking for my name and position in the company, then asked about the company address to confirm. It was a different address he had compare to our company's physical location. I had to hang up as it was getting sketchy.
