Fake hotel offer (Scam call) reported by


Robo caller pretended to adjust a headset to cover answering delay. Then said that I was eligible for some offer because I stayed at some hotel. I talked over the robot sales pitch, saying never call me again (much good that does) and hung up before I could hear more details. I see others seem to have been called by the Health Insurance Marketplace. If that's true, then the Caller ID may have been spoofed.

Callers from 844 477 7500 MAY be legitimate Healthcare Marketplace employees. I got a call this evening, the caller gave her first name and ID (well, anybody can do that...) and gave also correct healthcare.gov number to call to and verify the authenticity of the caller (anyone can also give that, knowing you will not verify it during the call). She wanted to verify my identity by asking my address and birth date before continuing. I only gave partial info and she was able to go on with that, putting me on hold while accessing my information (she first asked my permission to access the info). Sounds suspicious. But, when she returned, she had the correct information and said that the case is resolved now. I asked a few more questions, and she said there will be a letter mailed to my address but she did not know how soon the healthcare.gov web site will have the updated info. About half an hour after that there was a message in Healthcare.gov web site stating the case is resolved and closed. So this caller from 844 477 7500 was legitimate. They probably have a policy that they need to verify they are talking to the correct person, therefore asking some personal info. But as it is possible to fake even caller ID, please be careful about what info you give over the phone, it can be a scam artist also.
